Requirements for Teaching English in Italy
It is important to obtain a work permit before you travel to Italy. In some countries it is possible and even common to teach illegally, Italy is an exception. Schools generally do not employ people without proper permits.
If you are an EU national, this won’t be much of a problem. All that is required is a permit called ‘ricevuta di segnalazione di siggiorno’. This will allow you to stay in Italy for three months to look for work. Once you find a job, you will need to get a certificate of employment from your employer. Just bring this certificate, together with your “ricevuta di segnalazione di siggiorno”, when you apply for a permit to stay. Also, you will need to apply for a work permit, which remains valid as long as you are employed.
For non EU nationals, you first have to apply for ‘entry visa for reasons of work’ from your home country or country of residence. You should also have an offer of employment. You will need a worker’s registration card from the Provincial Inspectorate of Work. This is actually a booklet that contains your employment records for all the jobs you have in Italy. This is valid for ten years.
Regardless of whether you are an EU or non-EU national, you must have a passport with a minimum validity of six months to be able to work in Italy.
