English Teacher

Location:
Vacancies throughout Greece

Start Date:
September

Salary:
800 euros per month

Working Conditions:
Working conditions vary from one situation to another, and so the following is only a guide to what is typical. The majority of the English Language schools in Greece are small and privately owned. The pupils attend the local state school in the morning, and so the English schools operate in the afternoon and evening. Most schools employ only two or three teachers and have one or two hundred pupils. Attendance at such a school is the norm for children from all kinds of social backgrounds. They usually begin at the age of eight, and continue until they are at least fifteen.

You would not normally expect to teach the youngest children, unless you happen to speak Greek, but you might teach children of ten upwards. Classes last for one or sometimes two hours, and for the older pupils there is a strong orientation towards exams such as the Cambridge FCE and CPE. Most of the children are enthusiastic learners and classes are usually reasonably small, with perhaps ten or twelve members. Discipline is rarely a problem, although, like young teenagers everywhere, students can sometimes be boisterous.

You can expect to work with a high standard of materials and equipment. All students have a course book, containing material for all your lessons, and you will also have a teacher’s guide and audio CDs to accompany each course book. Most schools use computers and many are now equipped with interactive whiteboards.

Hours of work are normally between three and ten p.m. Monday to Friday. Some schools also have classes in the mornings, especially the larger schools in the big cities, which cater for older students, and it is possible that you might be required to work on Saturdays. You would normally teach for about twenty-five hours per week.

In addition to the hours spent teaching, you will also have to spend the proportionate amount of time planning lessons and correcting written work. We estimate that twenty-five teaching hours equates to a total work-load of forty hours per week.

Requirements:
Many of the positions that we have available are suitable for teachers beginning their career. The only essential qualifications are that you must be a native speaker of English and you must have a university degree and a TEFL certificate. It does not matter what subject your degree is in, although preference may be given to candidates with degrees in languages or related subjects. Competence in a foreign language is not a requirement for most posts, although some of our client schools are seeking teachers of other European languages as well as English. You will not be required to speak Greek.

Teach English in Slovakia

Location:
Michalovce, Slovakia

Working Conditions:
We are a small friendly school; most of our students are private students paying out of their own pockets and therefore motivated, enthusiastic and lots of fun to teach. The typical age range is about 13 to 40 with some older students. Our maximum group size is six students.

We know it’s difficult getting started in a new country so we can help arrange in-family accommodation or flat-shares for teachers arriving from abroad.

Requirements:
First of all, we believe that you must know something yourself before you can teach it and English is the same. For this reason all of our teachers are native speakers – currently all of us are from the UK.

Secondly, as Slovakia is part of the EU so you must have permission to work here (so in most cases you will be from Britain, Ireland or Malta – unless your spouse is from the EU or you have dual citizenship somewhere else in the EU – for example an American with a parent from Greece). If you are not eligible to work in the EU (for example an American with both parents from America) then it will be difficult, expensive (we don’t refund most of the costs) and slow to get a visa. If this is you, then it only makes sense to apply if you have a specific reason for wanting to come to Slovakia (for example if your girlfriend is returning here to complete her studies).

Thirdly, you must have a reasonably “normal” CV showing ability to stick at something for a period of time (whether the same job or course of study), it doesn’t make sense for us to train you up only to see you leave after 3 months (this is also why parts of this ad seem designed to discourage people who are not likely to enjoy it). This is also important because we can teach you to teach, but we can’t teach you to be reliable.

Contact Information:
You have a very good chance if you meet the 3 criteria mentioned above, in Eastern Slovakia we are not as able to be selective as we could be if we were elsewhere.

First you must send a CV and covering email, then we will send you a list of questions. If your answers are satisfactory then there will be a short phone interview, mainly to check that you are normal, not to try to trip you up.
